Replacing a Wooden Trailer Bed
Trailer beds take on a lot of wear and tear, and it’s not uncommon for them to become damaged or destroyed after a number of years in service. Thankfully, wooden trailer beds can be easily replaced from the comfort of your garage—all you need are a few tools and some new boards! To learn how to replace your wooden trailer bed, just read through our simple instructions below.
Prep
Before you begin removing and replacing your trailer’s wooden bed, begin by gathering your tools and supplies. You’ll want to make sure you have a drill—as well as a wire brush attachment—self-tapping screws, a hammer, screwdrivers, and a few nuts, bolts, and washers. You’ll also need a tape measure to check the length and width of the current boards so you can purchase correctly sized replacements.
Replacing the Bed
Once you’ve got all of your tools—as well as our replacement boards in hand—it’s time to get started! Start by using a screwdriver or your drill to remove the bolts holding the old boards in place. You can also use a crowbar or a saw to remove the boards if you’re unable to unscrew the bolts.
Once the old boards have been removed, use your wire brush attachment to remove rust and debris from the metal frame of your trailer. Once the frame has been cleaned up, you can begin laying down your new boards. For an easy installation, begin with the end and sideboards before working your way into the middle. When installing your new boards into your trailer’s frame, be sure to use self-tapping screws to ensure the bed is safely anchored into the metal below.
