90-Degree Rule

You’ve probably heard the term “90-degree rule” while out on the course. This rule states that you can drive out to your ball on the grass at a 90-degree angle. It’s important to note that you’ll have to follow the cart path to a spot that aligns with your ball, then make a right angle turn and drive straight toward the ball. The goal with this golf cart etiquette rule is to decrease the amount of time the vehicle is on the grass while still helping players get to their ball.

Cart Path Only

You may encounter days on the course where you must remain on the cart path at all times. In these situations, you’ll need to show some proper etiquette by staying off of the grass at all times. We suggest asking about the rule for the course for that day when you check in.

Pay Attention to Signs

Another important part of golf cart etiquette is paying attention to signs just like you would in your commuter car on the road. Signs can alert you to special notices and rules you’ll need to follow. If you’re unsure about the rules of a course, ask an attendant.

Be on Your Best Behavior

Although it can be tempting to take your vehicle on a “joy ride,” you should refrain from this kind of behavior. This is considered disrespectful and can lead to injuries too. Practice golf cart etiquette by only using your vehicle for getting from one shot to the next, traveling between holes, and entering or exiting the turf. Remember that you can be held liable for any damage done to the course’s vehicle.

Use Common Sense

Golf cart etiquette boils down to simply using common sense. This includes staying behind golfers while you’re driving, avoiding making any loud noises, and being polite to other players.
